Your Questions About Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Classes in Guelph — Answered Honestly
The most common questions we hear before a student’s first class. Still curious? Give us a call at 519-836-JITS(5487) — we’re happy to chat.
What is the difference between Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and traditional jujitsu?
Traditional jujitsu is a broad Japanese martial art that includes strikes, throws, joint locks, and weapons techniques. BJJ lessons evolved from a subset of judo and focuses specifically on ground fighting, positional control, and submissions. BJJ places a strong emphasis on technique and leverage, making it one of the most practical systems for real-world self-defence regardless of size or strength.
Is Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu useful in a real fight?
Yes. Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Classes in Guelph teach techniques built around controlling an opponent on the ground — where the majority of physical altercations end up. Because BJJ relies on leverage and positional control rather than strength or strikes, it is consistently effective for smaller individuals against larger opponents. It is a core component of mixed martial arts and is widely used in law enforcement and military training worldwide.
Is BJJ the hardest martial art to learn?
What makes Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Classes in Guelph at Royal City BJJ different?
Does BJJ rely more on technique or strength?
Technique is the foundation of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu lessons. The entire system is built around using leverage, timing, and positional awareness to overcome strength and size advantages. This is why BJJ is effective for people of all ages, body types, and fitness levels — including children and adults who are just starting out.
How long does it take to earn belts in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Classes in Guelph?
Progress depends on how consistently you train. Students who attend classes regularly — around 3 times per week — typically earn their first belt within about 1 year. The path to black belt takes approximately 10 years for dedicated students. Our BJJ class belt system provides clear, honest milestones so you always know exactly where you stand and what you’re working toward.
What should a beginner expect in their first BJJ class?
Is BJJ effective for self-defence?
Absolutely. Brazilian Jiu Jitsu lessons are widely considered one of the most practical self-defence systems available. It focuses on controlling a confrontation safely, neutralising aggression, and — if necessary — applying submission techniques to end a situation without relying on strikes. At our Guelph academy, self-defence applications are woven naturally into every program, from kids to adults.
What equipment or gear is needed for BJJ training?
For your trial class, just wear comfortable athletic clothing — shorts and a fitted t-shirt work perfectly. If you decide to join, you’ll need a gi (the traditional BJJ uniform) for gi classes and rash guards or shorts for no-gi sessions. Our team can guide you on what to purchase and where to find quality gear without overspending.
What is the difference between gi and no-gi BJJ?
Gi BJJ lessons are practiced wearing a traditional uniform with a jacket and pants. The gi allows for collar and sleeve grips that open up a wide range of techniques. No-gi BJJ is practiced in athletic clothing without a uniform, which removes those grips and creates faster, more scramble-based grappling. Most students at our Guelph academy train both, as each style builds complementary skills that make you a more complete grappler.
